Nonlinear is a 30-something-year-old woman in New York City’s musings about power dynamics, relationships, work, culture, and love. It’s an inner monologue of personal nature, but through those personal stories it offers a lens into collective social issues applicable to many. Think of it as a blend between diary pages about my explorations of the world, and a no-frills commentary and dissection of culture and reality as we know it.

This newsletter is for people who have felt that the linear paths we are told to follow in our physical, intellectual, and emotional lives have not served them or have stifled them. Getting lost or purposefully diverting from the trodden path is perhaps not a defect, but an enrichment.

🩷 Readers get

  • Raw and unfiltered personal essays about life, work, and love, connected to bigger societal and cultural questions

  • Human interest news that you may have missed, that the mainstream media may be not covering—specifically stories that surprise you, defying what you imagined they would be

  • Interviews with people who have led unconventional and nonlinear lives, bucked the status quo, or spoken truth to power

  • Culture insights as it relates to gender and relationships, the distribution of wealth, truth-to-power, joy and pleasure

  • Stories behind the surface-level stories, peeling back layers to reflect a deeper and more complex reality

About me

I’m Ariella Steinhorn, a writer and entrepreneur based in NYC. I work with people who want to unearth stories, tell compelling narratives, or make sense of a specific life inflection point. I founded Lioness, a platform for whistleblowers to provide first-person accounts, and Simone, a startup that connected workers to employment lawyers and therapists. After 13 romantic relationships and a chaotic dating life in my 20s, I launched a project called Nonlinear Love with a divorce attorney to share unconventional love stories.

In past lives I worked at Uber and led communications at subsidiaries of Ford and WeWork; I was also training to be a ballerina.

I’m interested in people who do not fit into the usual molds or boxes, and stories that liberate rather than constrain. I enjoys peeling back layers of reality with the understanding that there is always a story behind the story.
